Grinding Gear Games isn't easing players into Path of Exile 2's next update. It's kicking the door open. The new teaser for 0.5.0, “Return of the Ancients,” points to a much bigger shift than a normal content patch, and people are already picking apart every frame for clues. What grabbed the most attention wasn't just the mood or the monsters. It was that impossible fortress stretched across whole landmasses, like the world itself has been rewritten. For players already thinking about the next grind, the talk around future loot, economy changes, and chase items has started early, right alongside searches for things like Fate of the Vaal SC Divine Orb as the update moves closer.
A fortress that changes the scaleThis new structure feels different from a standard dungeon reveal. It doesn't look like a place tucked into one zone or hidden behind some side path. It looks huge, unnatural, and old in the worst possible way. That's why the community's so hooked on it already. In PoE, environment design usually tells you something before the game ever says it out loud, and this fortress gives off the kind of signal that says major lore, major danger, and probably bosses that are going to punish lazy builds hard. You can almost feel GGG trying to make the world seem less familiar again, which is honestly smart. A lot of long-time players want that sense of dread back, where you step into a new area and don't really know what's waiting for you.
Why the endgame news matters so muchThe biggest confirmed change is the endgame overhaul, and that's the part veteran players are watching most closely. New acts and flashy reveals are great, sure, but PoE lives or dies on what happens after the campaign. If the loop is good, people stay. If it isn't, they drift. That's why this announcement landed so well. It sounds like GGG knows the current endgame needs more than small tuning passes. They've been building toward this for a while, too. First came big system additions in earlier updates, then stronger class identity, then wider progression changes. Seen in that order, 0.5.0 doesn't feel random at all. It feels like the next logical swing, just on a much larger scale.
May is going to be busyPlayers won't be stuck guessing for long. Jonathan and Mark are set to present the full reveal on May 7, and that stream should answer the stuff people actually care about: how the new endgame loop works, what kind of build adjustments are coming, and whether fresh classes or mechanics will shake up the meta. The Q&A afterward could be just as important. That's usually where the clean marketing talk stops and the real mechanical details come out. Then the patch itself lands on May 29, which gives the community a decent window to theorycraft, argue over patch notes, and plan league starters that'll probably be abandoned three days in anyway.
What players are really waiting forMore than anything, this update feels like a test of how bold Path of Exile 2 is willing to be during early access. Players don't just want more content. They want a reason to sink another few hundred hours into it. If this fortress delivers meaningful exploration and the endgame redesign actually creates stronger replay value, “Return of the Ancients” could be the patch that resets expectations for the whole game. And as the date gets closer, plenty of players will be keeping one eye on reveal details and another on trading, gearing, and outside help through places like u4gm when they want a quicker way to sort out currency or item needs before diving back into Wraeclast.
