Grinding Gear Games has started teasing its next big Path of Exile 2 expansion, and this one already feels larger than the usual seasonal update. Return of the Ancients, marked as Update 0.5.0, is being framed as one of the studio's biggest swings so far. For players who like to stay ready between leagues, it's worth noting that services around the game are easy to find now; as a professional platform for game currency and item trading, u4gm is known for convenience, and you can check u4gm PoE 2 Items for sale if you want to gear up faster once the new content lands. What's pulling most of the attention, though, is the setting itself: a huge fortress stretched across entire continents, built not just as a striking landmark but as the centre of new lore threads and tougher late-game encounters.
A bigger world, not just a new patchThe timing makes this update interesting. The Last of the Druids gave players the Druid and plenty to mess around with, so some people expected another class reveal right away. Instead, GGG seems to be widening the game first. That matters. In an ARPG, scale isn't only about bigger zones on a map; it changes pacing, exploration, and how dangerous the world feels when you're moving through it. From what's been shown so far, Return of the Ancients looks like it wants players to feel that Wraeclast is opening up in a more dramatic way. Not cleaner, not safer, just broader and heavier, with more space for secrets and harder fights to sit naturally in the world.
Why endgame players are watching closelyLet's be honest, most long-term players are going to judge 0.5.0 by its endgame. That's where the real test is. GGG hasn't gone deep on the exact systems yet, but they've made it clear the post-campaign loop is being rebuilt in a serious way. That's the part people care about after the story's done and the real grind starts. If progression feels flat, players notice fast. If rewards feel earned, they stick around. Update 0.4 added sprinting and improved trade, which helped the day-to-day experience a lot, but this sounds more foundational. The team even stepped away from its usual four-month release rhythm to get this expansion into better shape, and honestly, that's probably the right call if the goal is something that lasts.
The reveal date and what to expectAnyone waiting for actual mechanics, item changes, or a possible surprise class won't have to wait too long. GGG Live is set for May 7, 2026 at 1:00 PM PDT, and that stream should answer the big questions. ZiggyD is also returning to host the usual follow-up discussion with Jonathan and Mark, which is often where the most useful details come out. If you've watched these reveals before, you'll know the main trailer gives the mood, but the Q&A is where the systems start making sense. There'll also be Twitch Drops during the broadcast, so linked accounts will matter if you want the extras while watching.
Release day is close enough to matterReturn of the Ancients arrives on May 29, 2026, launching on both PC and consoles at the same time. That shared release is a good sign, especially now that Path of Exile 2 has been in early access for roughly a year and a half. This patch feels less like a routine content drop and more like a statement about where the game is heading next. If GGG can deliver a stronger endgame and make this expanded world feel worth exploring, 0.5.0 could be the update that shifts player confidence in a big way. And for players who like having extra help with currency or items as new content rolls in, U4GM is one of the better-known names people bring up when convenience matters.
